£16Billion-Damages Of Expected Solar Storm

The UK-Met Office has warned of a new kind of weather disaster. Britain risks being crippled by huge electrical disturbances caused by storms in space unless a satellite network is built that can detect them coming, according to The Times.

The national weather service has told ministers a solar flare of the kind that has hit Earth two or three times in 200 years would cost the country £16 billion pounds in damage to computers, data transmission cables and power lines.

Such flares generate intense magnetic fields over Earth that burn out delicate electronics in a flash, sometimes setting them alight.
