The UN Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) paid tribute to the Egyptian peacekeeper Sargent Sabry Mohamed Ahmed Hussein who was killed when his convoy was hit by a landmine in the region of Mopti.

In a solemn ceremony held in the capital Bamako, United Nations peacekeepers paid tribute and said farewell to their colleague who was killed in the explosion of an improvised landmine. Five other Blue Helmets were wounded in the attack.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mohamed Hassam, Representative of the Egyptian contingent of MINUSMA said the blue helmets “Sargent Sabry was considered one of the best team leaders within the Egyptian combat convoy battalion, which operated in the Gao region and Mopti.”

SMA Force Commander, Lieutenant General Gyllensporre also said “we will respond by carrying out our duty as peacekeepers; patrolling day and night to protect the vulnerable and execute the convoys that are essential to this task. We will respond by standing our ground firmly, shoulder to shoulder with our Egyptian colleagues and we will remain proactive and strong in our fight against any enemy who threatens to undermine our mission to improve the conditions for those who seek to leave in peace in this country.”
